Rainham Marshes Exploration

23/01/2011

I can’t remember the last time I uploaded a photography based post on this blog, I guess I haven’t been out as much as I used to. However, since I got my new camera, a Nikon D3100, I’ve been itching to get back out and properly use it. Today I had the chance. Last Sunday myself and 2 friends were walking around Rainham Marshes looking for some birds to photograph (of which there were none) when we saw, in the middle of this recycling plant an abandoned building. Needless to say, me and Reiss Cleal went back the following Sunday (today) to explore.

Outside of the building, we managed to hop over the fence on the other side easily enough.

Inside the building one of the first rooms we entered produced this image. I really like the colouring, it reminds me of a film based on World War 2 where most of the rooms are brown.

Within most of the rooms there was a lot of paper documents, most of them seemed to be from the 90′s. Looking through these documents always interests me, as it’s a piece of recent history that few people have been able to view since the place closed. Here are a few that I snapped.

Not only did the original poster hopefully do its job, but within this photo (if produced as a poster) it could serve its purpose all over again.

This next one had to be placed in purely for the irony.

This picture is one of my favourites of the day.

They’ll make a yearbook about anything these days.

We ended our trip taking a look around some of the machinery used at the recycling plant. I’m not sure why they kept it so insecure on a day that very few people actually work there, but maybe they don’t expect two budding photographers to take a stroll round an industrial park. This photo was taken inside one of the large corrugated buildings. It was difficult to take many, as it was quite dark inside and we didn’t feel like making a run for it while carrying our tripods. Reiss managed to get scared twice by a black cat staring at him through some slots in the wall and to be quite honest, that was the most danger of being caught we came across all trip.

We managed to locate another potentially interesting building to explore, not too far away from this one, although it looks a little difficult to enter being on a main road. However, we shall try our best.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed getting out there to try and create it.

Thanks, and:

Academic Year 2010/11 – Day 17

11/11/2010

This is my first day back from my 2 weeks off timetable, that’s why there hasn’t been any day-by-day posts. Since my last module was handed in, the main task was to finish my essay in good time, ready for a 12th December hand in. This year I really need to push the essay as far as I can, looking into as many aspects as possible, but still keeping it nicely condensed and thorough. So far I have managed 4000 out of my 5000-6000 limit and I still have a lot to say. What I am going to do is write as many relevant and strong words as possible and then cut out the weakest, least relevant of those till I get to my 6000 limit.

I have also been thinking the last few days that I would like to start making youtube videos again. It’s quite hard to do a video which is interesting and engaging to the audience, when I haven’t been doing too much practical work, or photography. However, I have something in mind for a first video, so I’ll keep you posted on the progress of that.

A week on Friday I should receive my results for the first module. Please let it be over 60% and hopefully 65%, I did work quite hard on that module and feel I have done enough. I guess I will have to wait and see.

Plenty to say.

Inspiration:

I have been looking at a website called “TED” recently and I really suggest that everyone who reads this takes a look. It is filled to the brim with inspiring, interesting and very factual videos about everything and anything, from art & design to politics to social, moral and environmental issues.

One recent video I viewed was from a conference in which Jane Mcgonigal spoke on how; “Gaming can make a better world” In this video Jane discusses the ways in which she feels games could be designed to influence people to do better things in real life.

I felt I would give this a mention as it inspired me greatly, it also got me thinking a lot about how this could work, I spent about half an hour discussing new ideas that she could use with a friend and I ended up with something I feel could possibly work in the future.

I demand you to watch this video, it is highly interesting and has some astounding facts and figures behind it.

My Projects:

As part of my summer holiday off college, I have to do college work (oh the poor poor irony). This consists of coming up with an idea for what my graphic design brief will be, this is the main project which takes me throughout the year. Also I have to start work on researching and writing my essay.

I would like to do the essay base on propaganda, most likely based around a question such as: “Looking at the moral, social and political issues the artist or designer face when producing propaganda” Due to this, I believe I will do my main project based somewhere around or within World War 2, where some of the most famous propaganda appears. This will link it all together nicely and hopefully keep it interesting throughout, stay tuned for more updates as to exactly what my brief will be.

Collaboration:

As you may, or may not, be aware – Myself and 2 friends have decided to start a collaborative photography blog called “Frozen Reflex” clicking the link will take you straight to it and inside you will find weekly themes, challenges, reviews and trips we take, all photography based. Please take a look, comment, subscribe to future posts and enjoy.

New Year, New Theme, New Blog!

07/07/2010

Not a new blog as such, more of a re-vamp. The old theme was getting a bit painful on the eye due to it’s heavy black and bright orange. I have decided to go along with this new simple theme, quite understated, hoping that the content will stand out further (and so more people are able to read it).

Also, I was aware of the gradual neglect whilst I am not at college, this is silly,I don’t stop having ideas and carrying them out while im not at college. So from now on you can enjoy more regular, hopefully every 2 days, updates. All based around my thoughts, small drawings and ideas. Hopefully this will show you a little more about  me as a designer and person, but also help me evaluate what I’m up to creatively.

This is also the start of my new university year (the one that counts). Currently during the interim summer period, but that does not mean no work. I have to work hard during this period and the next year if I am to achieve my full potential. Get ready for a lot of ideas, notes, thoughts, drawings, photos, graphics, typography and general madness that you used to find on the Tom Barden Design blog!

Oh and don’t worry, I havn’t forgotten:-

Lake District, Collaboration & Long Time No See!

28/06/2010

Hi guys, It’s been a while since my last post, a scary while at that! But I’m here now.

First up: Two Weeks ago me and 2 friends travelled up north to experience some of the scenery and mountain walks of the Lake District. I had been there before, but only as a youngster, but wow, was I blown away by the sheer beauty of the place.

Plenty to see, explore and photograph. However, despite it being a prime photography location, i spent more time looking and less time snapping, I’m afraid to say.

From getting lost in the mountains on the first night to nearly dying climbing the old man of Coniston (mountain) it certainly was an adventure and home just doesn’t seem the same since.

Here are a few pictures I got from the trip:

Magical Mountains -

Ghost Town -

What’s That -

Fox Gloves –

Old Man’s Lake -

One more small thing to post this time. Me and the people I went Lake District with have created a collaboration blog for our photography visit <Frozen Reflex> to see it in it’s glory!

A Secret Pond!

29/04/2010

Today I took a trip over a pond near my college that nobody seems to know about and quite rightly too, as it is in the strangest area you could find. Anyway, I took my new photography bag, my new wide angle lens (although I only used it for the bluebells picture) and took some shots.

Here are a few of the pictures I managed to get, I am very pleased with their quality.

Sunshine Photography!

18/04/2010

Howdy all!

I was fed up of being indoors during the lovely, bright, warm weather today, so decided to take the old Nikon over the local fields.

I explored further than usual and walked a fair distance, but not in vain.

Here are the 2 main pictures I took that I am happy with, below them is a composition of four photos that I felt worked nicely together:
