Unity – Experimental Poster Typeface

17/02/2011

I designed this typeface for a university project 2 years ago. It never really got used and got left at the far reaches of my hard drive. I have since revisited it and improved upon it. I also decided that I would try my hand at presenting it in a certain style as a way of promotion.

To do this I designed the logo based upon two “U’s” in the typeface, this tries to symbolise the name of the typeface, as they look like they are united. I also experimented with branding it to some form of charitable or aid organisation, this can be seen in the second poster. The second poster is based upon my original university poster, although i feel it is much improved, enjoy:

Academic Year 2010/11 – Day 13

15/10/2010

Today was, very much, another type orientated day. A little bit of sketch book work, followed up by some illustrator to smooth off those curves and realise the sketches in digital form. I’ve noticed a large improvement in my ability to do quick sketches of letter forms (primarily the letter “a”) just to get my thoughts down onto the page.

So far all my designs have been based around Sans-serif style. Although over the weekend I’m going to take my exploration into different letters and some serif/script based work. Hopefully this will open some ideas up. Something else that is in need of some exploration is my symbols. Once I have developed the typography experiments a little further I shall be looking into how i can match type up with symbols.

For now, a little about what I have been developing so far:

First up, one of my research pages, looking into current wayfinding typefaces and how they are formed.

Secondly, my first page of sketches. On the right the top letter is the one I designed, compared to the four below which consist of Arial, Gill sans and Helvetica.

The next series of images are just the stages I used whilst on the computer to develop my letter form. You can also see how my latest design for an “a” holds up against my initial design. I think the old version is possibly better for wayfinding due to it’s condensed nature. I feel that the second “a” has a little more charm to it. It still needs a little work on it to sort out some of the edges which are perhaps a little too straight, but it is coming along. The hardest thing I have found is matching up smaller letters with the larger ones such as “d” and “b”.

The new version, I believe, looks a little more like an “a” but I still think it takes up too much space to be much good for a signage system. It could potentially be better on longer signs, not so much on taller ones.

What are your thoughts on the two variations?

Academic Year 2010/11 – Day 10

08/10/2010

Today was quite interesting. Began with a meeting which put down all the relevant dates for both the essay and development of ideas modules. I came out of it feeling rather nervous and demoralized, not because I haven’t done anything, but because I know I have lots and lots still left to do. However, I decided today that i would look into something new, or at least, try something rather new. This was typography, not fancy type like I have experimented with in the past, but a proper typeface. This first test isn’t particularly very good for what i want to achieve in my navigational systems, although it served as a good base to refresh my Illustrator abilities. Check out the two letters i made down below. Bare in mind that the “d” is still not finished.

Bouncy Text in After Effects!

25/03/2010

I’ve just finished some quick experimentation in After Effects.

The experiment was in aid of my self authoted brief animation which i am going to be produing.

This is a short seven second typographic animation, which consists of the text bouncing, falling, spinning and with added motion blur.

Africa Type Experiment!

03/02/2010

This is the latest type experiment that I have played with.

It is yet unfinished and this is just the initial stage of the design. I would like to create a whole typeface in this style.

I have tried to evoke Africa through the use of sharp triangles, the reason for this is i feel this shape represents africa best. A tough place to live, hard terrain, elephants tusks, dead trees, the bones of dead animals, spears of tribes and the teeth of predatory animals.
