Rainham Marshes Exploration

23/01/2011

I can’t remember the last time I uploaded a photography based post on this blog, I guess I haven’t been out as much as I used to. However, since I got my new camera, a Nikon D3100, I’ve been itching to get back out and properly use it. Today I had the chance. Last Sunday myself and 2 friends were walking around Rainham Marshes looking for some birds to photograph (of which there were none) when we saw, in the middle of this recycling plant an abandoned building. Needless to say, me and Reiss Cleal went back the following Sunday (today) to explore.

Outside of the building, we managed to hop over the fence on the other side easily enough.

Inside the building one of the first rooms we entered produced this image. I really like the colouring, it reminds me of a film based on World War 2 where most of the rooms are brown.

Within most of the rooms there was a lot of paper documents, most of them seemed to be from the 90′s. Looking through these documents always interests me, as it’s a piece of recent history that few people have been able to view since the place closed. Here are a few that I snapped.

Not only did the original poster hopefully do its job, but within this photo (if produced as a poster) it could serve its purpose all over again.

This next one had to be placed in purely for the irony.

This picture is one of my favourites of the day.

They’ll make a yearbook about anything these days.

We ended our trip taking a look around some of the machinery used at the recycling plant. I’m not sure why they kept it so insecure on a day that very few people actually work there, but maybe they don’t expect two budding photographers to take a stroll round an industrial park. This photo was taken inside one of the large corrugated buildings. It was difficult to take many, as it was quite dark inside and we didn’t feel like making a run for it while carrying our tripods. Reiss managed to get scared twice by a black cat staring at him through some slots in the wall and to be quite honest, that was the most danger of being caught we came across all trip.

We managed to locate another potentially interesting building to explore, not too far away from this one, although it looks a little difficult to enter being on a main road. However, we shall try our best.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed getting out there to try and create it.

Thanks, and:

What do I Actually do at Work?

08/11/2010

Some of you reading this post may know, that for the past 3 years I have been working at a local sign designers. We cater mainly for small businesses, although we also deal with the occasional larger contract from London Underground or London City Airport. I figured it was about time that I uploaded a post, just to show some of the projects I have worked on and talk a little about them. So here goes, It’s not all brilliant flashy design, but I’d say it all suits its purpose: (to view images larger please click them)

First up I have some of the standard work we do:

Various vehicles; Odessa Security, which I placed the decals on the vehicle and Excel Design Build, which I originally done the logo and have worked on various vehicles of theirs.

We get quite a few driving school cars come to us, and it does seem to be an ever expanding industry. Here are two that I have worked on and done designs for. A1 will pass has to be a firm favourite, purely for the little alien/ant thing.

A little bit of an eccentric vehicle this next one, a camper van, with pink and purple stripes. A little embarrassing to work on outside the shop on this. Took 3 days overall to get this completed, mainly due to the amount of cleaning that needed to be done prior to application.

Now onto some more unique and unusual jobs I have tackled at the shop:

Neon signs which were produced for a low budget film called “Dead Cert” where gangsters and vampires star side by side.

A recreation I done of an old fruit machine cover that someone wanted to look similar to the original. Original on left my version on right.

And now just the first shop sign I went out and installed way back in 2007 and next to it a pavement sign for a flower shop in Dagenham.

I have tried to get a variety of different things I have worked on at the shop over the years. Some came from way back 2007 and others fairly recently in 2010.

Thanks for stopping by.

Academic Year 2010/11 – Day 15

21/10/2010

Another day of just getting down and dirty with the work! I’ve now completed my rough presentation ready for tomorrow, i’ve also printed off some quick prompt cards, which will make it flow a lot better, and i wont need to look at the screen, unless i’m talking about the examples. Managed to get my rationale done early this morning, although just a quick draft. Once I have done my dry presentation run through tomorrow, I will get some feedback and be in a much better position to improve upon everything. I think I will spend Saturday (as I don’t have any work) slowly going through any corrections i feel i need to make. I can then spend Sunday and Monday looking through my books and adding in any thoughts and research points I have yet to include. Tuesday will hopefully just be final preparations before the big day.

How do you Progress Forwards in a Backwards World?

10/07/2010

Agreed, right from the off, this is a little different to what I normally write about in posts and is a little off topic from my actual blog, but as part of my new approach to the blog (updating regularly) I am going to add in this little rule: post about anything I find interesting, or a need to discuss.

So the question: “In a backwards world, how do you progress forwards?” It occurred to me today that the way forward, may actually be backwards. I know… silly, right? Wrong. Just think about it for a second, I, as you may be aware, am from the UK, London to be precise and boy is it going downhill. Already overpopulated, like the whole country, even the world, and increasing further more. The government, in all its wisdom, however is deciding now is the time for a mass increase in the amount of flats and housing being built, this is to cater for yet more people. More people means more cars, more cars means heavier traffic, heavier traffic equals, yes you guessed it; increased pollution.

I naively, was under the impression that the world, therefore the British government, wanted to cut down on pollution. So wouldn’t it make much more sense to deter people away from; firstly this overcrowded city and secondly from the country as a whole. After all, it has been said by so called experts that Britain, as a land mass, should only be able to support 32 million, we are currently working our way into the 70 millions.

This however is beside the point, back to the matter at hand. What I would like to know first is what happened to the patriotism of the country? I agree, the English as a nation are very patriotic to our troops overseas, to our football team and sports in general, but where has the old patriotism gone? Why are things not like it was during World War 2 when the whole country pulled together, supported one another, we don’t need a war to do that, it’s just good human practice.

Something else to talk about is music, what has happened to the world of music? All we listen to nowadays is commercialised rubbish, (don’t all hate me at once) it’s true. Justin Bieber, Cheryl Cole, Britney Spears. What is that? It’s a disgrace, none of them can sing, all are manufactured to make money by the record companies who prey on young teenagers, mainly girls. Don’t even get me started on this entire hip hop, rap and R’n’B culture happening before my eyes. I personally am a classic rock and heavy metal fan, although a lot of people would turn their noses up at this, in my defence I 90% listen to the 60’s through to the 80’s stuff and very VERY  little of the modern day equivalent, because once again, modern day music is terrible. What happened to the 1930’s and 40’s songs by the ink spots?

No wonder some kids these days find themselves going back to older music, sure the 70’s and 80’s was pretty terrible in some aspects, but it was one hell of a lot better than today’s counterparts.

I’d like to continue and discuss things such as consumerism, globalisation, but I feel myself getting more and more wound up. The lack of common sense in this world astounds me and the amount of seemingly brain dead people who fall for this junk, I have been discussing, amazes me. Yes maybe that is a controversial thing to say and no I’m not the smartest person around, but I would put myself mid-way in the educated pile , plus open minded enough to accept certain things, but with enough common sense to step back and say “hey now, what’s all that about?”.

I would just like each and every one of you reading this (if anyone) to think about what I have said, going backwards (in time) can be the new forwards, we can continue evolving technologies and improving out life styles, so long as we take steps to provide a future for us all. This means smart environmental, moral and social decisions.

Plenty to say.

Inspiration:

I have been looking at a website called “TED” recently and I really suggest that everyone who reads this takes a look. It is filled to the brim with inspiring, interesting and very factual videos about everything and anything, from art & design to politics to social, moral and environmental issues.

One recent video I viewed was from a conference in which Jane Mcgonigal spoke on how; “Gaming can make a better world” In this video Jane discusses the ways in which she feels games could be designed to influence people to do better things in real life.

I felt I would give this a mention as it inspired me greatly, it also got me thinking a lot about how this could work, I spent about half an hour discussing new ideas that she could use with a friend and I ended up with something I feel could possibly work in the future.

I demand you to watch this video, it is highly interesting and has some astounding facts and figures behind it.

My Projects:

As part of my summer holiday off college, I have to do college work (oh the poor poor irony). This consists of coming up with an idea for what my graphic design brief will be, this is the main project which takes me throughout the year. Also I have to start work on researching and writing my essay.

I would like to do the essay base on propaganda, most likely based around a question such as: “Looking at the moral, social and political issues the artist or designer face when producing propaganda” Due to this, I believe I will do my main project based somewhere around or within World War 2, where some of the most famous propaganda appears. This will link it all together nicely and hopefully keep it interesting throughout, stay tuned for more updates as to exactly what my brief will be.

Collaboration:

As you may, or may not, be aware – Myself and 2 friends have decided to start a collaborative photography blog called “Frozen Reflex” clicking the link will take you straight to it and inside you will find weekly themes, challenges, reviews and trips we take, all photography based. Please take a look, comment, subscribe to future posts and enjoy.

More Vector Work 2!

16/04/2010

Hi guys, it does seem to be the “in thing” for me at the moment. Simply because I enjoy taking my photographs and creating simplistic vectorised versions of them. So here is yet another vector, this time of my “Lonely Boat” image.

New Modules! Photography! Updates!

19/03/2010

Ok guys, I have now officially started the two brand new modules on my Graphics course. The first is the essay module in which I have to write a proposal and then a 3000 word essay on a subject of my choice (although one being relevant to what I haves studied) I have decided to study and write about – “ Has globalism taken over as the new colonialism, and has this had a negative effect upon the world’s developing countries?” – I think this will be of interest to me and due to this, i should be able to learn a lot more and write a better argument towards.

The second module is the “self authored brief” in which, as the name suggests, I have to write my own brief on anything I want (as long as I have a reason behind my choice).

I have chosen to do an information design piece which will inform people on the development of Heavy Metal from thee 1960′s to present day through the use of an animation. Supporting the animation will be a small book, with a poster design to promote and advertise the animation. I think it should be an interesting brief and may be calling upon you guys through the use of questionnaires and surveys.

This Sunday I am going to be exploring another abandoned building (well one that i have been to before) hopefully this time I don’t have to run from any guards… BUT exploration means… more photography, so I’m very pleased to be getting back out there.

And one last update, I eventually got my D&AD work submitted today, so that is all out of the way.

Simplistic Photographic Illustration no.3!

14/02/2010

Ok this will be the last post I make today… I promise! Went a little crazy today due to completing a few different designs (all based around the same thing)

Tested tracing a knife this time round, it has inspired me further to do a little story board with no text all in this style, maybe each frame asa revered black to white to give slight contrast.. im not sure, anyone else have any ideas?
